“You can cut all the flowers but you cannot keep the Spring from coming.”
Spring is a time for renewal, rebirth and change. With this newest custom case, we have selected 5 whites, 1 rose and 6 reds that for us, gather the spirit of spring, and should be enjoyed during those special moments until summer. Our last two cold season Custom Cases were filled with more reds, so we decided what better time to introduce you to whites, than the warm time of year! The best wine to start with is the pink one: Lago Vinho Verde Rose. We have changed the minds of countless wine enthusiasts and turned them on to the blush stuff. If you haven’t had one, you will be surprised at the dry finish, outstanding flavors, versatility with food and affordability. Warm weather means time for deck sitting, so enjoy this pasttime with the crisp “patio-pounders” like the Pine Ridge Chenin Blanc/Viognier, ClaudVal Blanc and the Villa Wolf Pinot Gris, they will reward you into the summer months and go great with light white cheeses and tart and fresh green salads. When the crabs start running, make some crab cakes and serve with the rich but crisp Santa Barbara Verdicchio. There are hearty reds, like the The Fableist Pinot Noir and Predator Zin, that can be sipped during the cool rainy nights of late April and early May, and lighter bodied refreshing reds like Vecchio Marone Rosso and Kenwood Pinot Noir, that can be served slightly chilled and enjoyed on warm afternoons. When you take the grill out of storage you can enjoy the charred steaks, smoky chicken or spicy pork with zesty and earthy Killka Red Blend or if you camping, the rich and decadent Fiction Red Blend…which comes in a can! Don’t be afraid of change, because it must come.
|1.||Pine Ridge Chenin Blanc/Viognier 2015, California
$14.99 750ml $143.90 case
This just tastes like spring! Bright aromatics of stone fruits like peach and apricot accented with notes of clementine. The juicy texture is utterly refreshing in every way. Great by itself, spicy asian food, or seafood.
|2.||Lago Vinho Verde Rose 2016, Vinho Verde, Portugal
$9.99 750ml $95.90 case
When the sun comes out, it means it’s time to drink pink. This is one of our favorite from the 2016 vintage. Fresh, lively and best of all, CHEAP! At ten bucks it over delivers on flavor, brimming with notes of melon, strawberry and raspberry. Not super dry or extremely tart, so it’s great to enjoy ice cold on the back porch, or better yet, at the beach!
|3.||Villa Wolf Pinot Gris 2015, Pfalz, Germany
12.99 750ml $124.70 case
One of the hits of our case last Spring was the Villa Wolf Pinot Noir Rose, and fans of that wine will surely love this Pinot Gris. It is close in style to the rose, with vibrant floral and citrus aromas, and accompanied by a outstanding juicy quality. Having one glass is simply not an option.
|4.||La Chablisienne Petit Chablis 2015, Burgundy, France
$16.99 750ml $163.10 case
In recent years the prices for wines from the famous Burgundy region have risen exponentially. The Chardonnay from this region is famous for being extremely rich in aroma, texture and minerality, and the wines from the northern part of the region, Chablis, are known for their racy acidity and outstanding minerality. This selection delivers the classic flavors, and for a price point with which we are more comfortable. Aromas of meyer lemon, green apple, limestone gravel, and flint. Very dry and crisp on the palate with a subtly-rich texture.
|5.||Santa Barbara Verdicchio dei Castello di Jesi 2015, Marche, Italy
$11.99 750ml $115.10 case
An example of why we love Italian white wines. There is so much to love about this simple wine from the Adriatic coast of Marche region in central Italy. The moderately priced gem is vibrantly fresh and crisp, making it a wonderful accompaniment to seafood – especially crab cakes.
|6.||Claude Val White Blend 2015, Languedoc, France
$8.99 750ml $86.30 case
The winemaker invited a lot of friends to the party on this one. Six grapes are dancing in the blend, and they really make something special. We love the bright citrus and pear notes with a little white flower component and a dry finish. 35% Grenache Blanc, 25% Vermentino, 20% Chenin Blanc, 10% Chasan, 5% Mauzac, 5% Sauvignon Blanc.
|7.||Field Recordings Fiction Red Blend 2014, Paso Robles, California
$9.99 500ml $31.96 4 pack
Think outside of the bottle! We first tasted this wine out of the bottle alongside many of the other impressive wines from Andrew Jones (including the popular The Fableist Cab) and we were very delighted at the quality of the wines, but also the humor, creativity and rebellious style that comes through each release from the winemaker. This is a perfect example – CANNED WINE. Woah, crazy idea but appropriate. It is more environmentally friendly, and a great container for this time of the year. The 500ml can is two-thirds of the size of a normal bottle of wine, and extremely portable. It is durable and light. Great to share for a picnic, festival, boating or camping. Besides all that…the wine is utterly delicious. Rich dark fruit aromatics with hints of violets. Round and lush on the palate with silky tannins and a long finish. 36% Zinfandel, 18% Mourvedre, 14% Grenache, 12% Syrah, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Tempranillo, 4% Viognier
|8.||Vecchio Marone Rosso Edizione Privata 2016, Italia
$11.99 750ml $115.10 case
Where’s it come from? Fogedabout it. What grapes? Fogedabout it. How’s it taste? BELISSIMO! We debuted this wine a few months ago and it “disappeared,” why? We may never know, but the combination of its mysterious label, incredible rich flavor and texture and great price make for a pretty darn good story. Flavors of dark cherry, blueberry and chocolate. Silky and brooding. Great for pasta, pizza or just sipping.
|9.||The Fableist Pinot Noir 2015, Central Coast, California
$19.99 750ml $191.90 case
The Fableist is a collaboration between winemakers Curt Schalchlin and Andrew Jones. Curt, owner and vintner of the heralded winery, Sans Liege, is known for his critically acclaimed Rhone varietals. Andrew, winemaker of Field Recordings spends his days planning and planting vineyards and has stood foot in just about every vineyard on the Central Coast. Together, they produce The Fableist, a collaboration that gives special attention to the craft and story behind each wine. This dense and rich Pinot Noir has aromas of black cherries, blue raspberries and vanilla Coke. Medium to full palate with balanced acidity and a baking spice finish.
|10.||Killka Red Blend 2014, Uco Valley, Mendoza, Argentina
$12.99 750ml $124.70 case
Malbec and Red Blends are the two hottest wine categories in the store, so we thought a blend containing Malbec should be present in this custom case. Here we have a not so unusual, but totally delicious blend that is juicy, but with grip and power. The Cabernet lends a silkiness to the blend and a subtle touch of oak adds nice coffee and baking spice notes. 50% Malbec, 35% Cabernet, 10% Syrah and 5% Petit Verdot
|11.||Predator Old Vine Zinfandel 2015, Lodi, California
$14.99 750ml $143.90 case
Predator Zinfandel is sourced from 50+ year old vines that produce rich and intensely flavored fruit. The resulting wine is big and bold with hallmark “old vine” velvety texture, spice and vibrant varietal flavors. This wine has that intense, distinctive flavor profile that is loved in a Zin. Smooth, spicy and a delicious dusting of cocoa on the finish. Aromas of bright raspberry, blackberry, black pepper and smoky oak. The palate is bold with red raspberry, cherry, juicy blackberry, black pepper with smooth tannins.
|12.||Kenwood Pinot Noir 2014, Russian River Valley, California
$11.99 750ml $115.10 case
The Kenwood wines have made a bit of a resurgence recently and we are happy to feature this outstanding value in our custom case. Russian River Valley is home to some of the greatest Pinot Noir vines in the world. The grapes on these vines create wines that have character and complexity and a decadent silky textural component. This beauty has explosive red raspberry and cherry aromas with a hint of earth.
