Top 12 price: $125.50

1. Tarima Monastrell 2009
Jumilla, Spain
$8.99 750ml $86.30 case

Jorge Ordonez is one of the most famous (if not the most famous) importers of Spanish wine in the US, and he made his fame by providing us Yanks with great values like this 100% Monastrell. Aromas of dark chocolate, prunes, licorice and violets lead to a palette full of dark fruit, spice and more violets

2. X Winery White 2008
North Coast, California
$12.99 750ml $124.70 case

Top 12 fans will notice that our last sampler featured this Winery’s Red Blend, which we sold TONS of. So this month we bring you this lively and fresh blend of 48% Sauvignon Blanc, 25% Albarino, 20% Muscat Blanc and 6% Chardonnay. It displays aromas of bright citrus fruits like lemon and grapefruit, and on the palate there are quenching flavors of apricot, orange blossom and white tea, balanced with a nice amount of acid and dry finish.

3. Chemistry White Alsace Blend 2009
Willamette Valley, Oregon
$12.99 750ml $124.70 case

Chehalem Winery has always been known for their outstanding Pinot Noirs, and we recommend trying one the next time you are in the mood for a well structured, mouth filling, silky textured, medium-bodied red. However, we are writing this little bit to introduce their new white blend that draws inspiration from one of the most famous white wine regions in the world, Alsace. This blend takes the old-world blend known as edelzwicker and adds a new-world twist; a Chardonnay base. 57% Chardonnay, 28% Pinot Gris, 12% Riesling, 3% Pinot Blanc. Aromas and flavors of apricot, green apple, wet stone and a touch of spice.

4. Fattoria ColSanto Montefalco Rosso 2007
Montefalco DOC, Umbria, Italy
$13.99 750ml $134.30 case

A blend of 50% Sangiovese and 50% Sagrantino, it is an authentic Umbrian “vino di tavola” with huge dark cherry aromas, good minerality, healthy acid, and silky texture. Beautiful expression of Italian Wine making. Enjoy with strong salty cheese, like pecorino, and roasted pork tenderloin.

5. Les Grandes Vignes Muscadet 2008
Coteaux de la Loire, Loire, France
$11.99 750ml $115.10 case

Crisp, fruity, mineral, dry, refreshing, value. These should be the words synonymous with Loire whites. However, lately they have fallen in to the esoteric category. So to do our little part in the revival of this area in north-west France, we bring to you a lovely Muscadet that exemplifies all of the wonderful qualities of the Loire, and at a great price. When is the last time you had a single vineyard French wine for under $20?

6. Chateau Musar Jeune 2008
Bekaa Valley, Lebanon
$15.99 750ml $153.50 case

Taste it blind, we dare you to try to think of someplace other than France. A blend of unoaked 60% Cinsault, 20% Syrah and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, that is rich, soft and well suited for food. The winery has been in business since 1930 and the current winemaker/owner has been making wine at the estate since 1959, when he completed his oenology education in Bordeaux.

7. Cline Cool Climate Syrah 2007
Sonoma Coast, California
$17.99 750ml $172.70 case

If you are a Midway fan, chances are you are a Cline fan.  We love them not only for their quality and value, but also for their Rhone inspired wines.  This Syrah, however is only related to the Rhone by varietal; it is truly California in nature, with huge jammy blackberry and blueberry aromas and flavors.  Pair this one with a Rib Eye generously dosed with pepper and grilled to perfection.

8. Aresti Gewurztraminer 2009
Curico Valley, Chile
$8.99 750ml $86.30 case

It is very unusual to find a Gewurztraminer from Chile, so when we tasted this delicate semi-sweet white we knew it was right for the Top 12. Elegant aromas of rose pedals and candied apricots lead to lovely flavors of honey and fresh peach.

9. Yamhill Valley Vineyards Estate Pinot Noir 2007
McMinnville AVA, Willamette Valley, Oregon
$21.99 750ml $211.11 case

The Pinot Noirs coming out of Willamette Valley are all the rage in the wine world, so we bring you a boutique, all estate-grown beauty that will turn you on to this appellation forever. Rich aromas of raspberry and strawberry laced with spice box and hints of leather will go nicely with a variety of cheeses and roasted meats and vegetables.

10. Home Grown Red Blend 2008
California
$9.99 750ml $95.90 case

When Italian families settled in California, they created their own style of winemaking- the Italian field blend. It is from this style that Home Grown Red is made. Equal parts Syrah, Barbera, and Petite Sirah give this rich, round red a multitude of aromas and flavors. “Mulberry Jam, sweaty saddle, blueberry buckle, roll in the hay, tapioca pudding” That’s how they describe it. We describe it as downright delicious and satisfying. It goes with just about anything from pizza to burgers to standing rib roasts to fried chicken. You’ll want a case or two of this stuff! An unbelievable value at just under ten bucks!

11. La Tour Coste Cotes Du Rhone “Les Trencats” 2007
Cotes du Rhone, France
$12.99 750ml $124.70 case

Note: This is a special bottling of the same wine reviewed by Robert Parker as “Le Ferme du Mont Cotes du Rhone le Ponnant 2007”

“This small estate’s dedicated, conscientious, young proprietor, Stephane Vedeau, appears intent on making a top-flight reputation for himself. Even better is the stacked and packed, very concentrated, yet elegant, pure, and impeccably well-balanced 2007 Cotes du Rhone Le Ponnant. This big-time Cotes du Rhone exhibits loads of concentration as well as abundant red and black fruit characteristics intermixed with notions of incense, spice, pepper, and licorice.” Robert Parker for Wine Advocate: 90 points

12. La Vieille Ferme Rose 2009
Ventoux AOC, France
$7.99 750ml $76.70 case

Rule #27 of Wine Shopping: The wines from France with the roosters on the label are some of the best you can get for under $10. Yes we just made that rule up, but its true, and don’t ask us for the other 26 rules because we have yet to translate them from French to English. We digress, this rose made from Cinsault and Grenache is jam packed with those fresh strawberry and watermelon aromas that pair perfectly with a light lunch or sipping by the pool.

The Coteaux du Giennois is located just a few miles north of Sancerre in the Loire Valley. The wine is made of 100% Sauvignon Blanc and has many similarities to a fine Sancerre, except for the price! In fact, it is often referred to as a “baby Sancerre.” The citrus, mineral nose, and palate will stay with you for the evening.

6. Wild Rock Pinot Noir 2008
Central Otago, New Zealand
$14.99 750ml $143.90 case

The cool climate of the world’s southern-most wine region is ideal for growing Pinot Noir, when combined with great winemaking, it is capable of producing world class juice. TJ Peabody and Steve Smith MW, the minds behind New Zealand’s famous Craggy Range, are responsible for this succulent, lush, and slightly herbaceous beauty.

7. Casa de la Sal Tinto Reserva 2004
Alicante, Spain
$9.99 750ml $95.90 case

This Spanish beauty comes from Valencia. Made from the Monastrell grape, this dark red has aromas that explode out of the glass; notes of ripe berry fruit, roasted meat, and mineral flavors. It opens up beautifully, leading to a balsamic finish. Paired with roasted pork tenderloin, it would make for a scrumptious meal.

8. Ledgewood Creek Owl House Red NV
California
$9.99 750ml $95.90 case

Having no vintage and a secret blend (maybe Grenache, Syrah, Mouvedre, Merlot, Cinsault?), make this juicy, plump, and vibrant red intriguing. We chose it for our “Top 12” because it is an oddity and is simply delicious. Flavors of dark berries, plum, and black currant are accompanied by a warm mouth-feel and a long finish. A cheeseburger or a pizza “wit da works” is the way to go here.

9. Wurtz Potate! Dry Riesling 2008
Rheinhessen, Germany
$13.99 750ml $134.30 case

A discovery Elon made while in German, Wurtz makes some very good modern Riesling. Crisp, dry, and fruit forward, with flavors of lime, grapefruit, and slight mineral, it is perfect for sushi or just sipping. Potate means “cheers” in Latin, so drink up!

10. Cresta Azul Petillant White NV
Spain
$9.99 750ml $95.90 case

This is for those lovers of bold esoteric whites. Petillant means lightly sparkling, and that light fizz is balanced ever so elegantly with a delicate sweetness and interesting notes of lavender and sweet citrus fruit aromas and flavors. 50% Macabeo, 25% Moscatel, 15% Parellada and 10% Xarello.

Fall/Winter ‘09 Top 12

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

Tenuta De Angelis Falerio 2008
Marche, Italy
$8.99 750 ml. $86.30 Cs.

A blend of 70% Trebbiano d’Abruzzo, 20% Pecorino, and 10% Passerina.  What a lovely, aromatic, all-purpose white!  It has some floral notes on the nose and herbal, pear, and dried fig flavors that would make this the perfect accompaniment to shrimp Scampi, fettucine Alfreddo, or for just sipping.

Finca Noceti 1919 Malbec 2008
Mendoza, Argentina
$11.99 750 ml. $115.10 cs.

It has that deep red color and nose that will suck you right into the glass!  There’s plenty of rich dark berry fruit and firm, round tannins to satisfy the most discerning palates. Go out and buy a couple of Porterhouse steaks and grill ‘em to perfection, ’cause you are really gonna love ‘em along with this Argentine beauty!

Kato Sauvignon Blanc 2008
Marlborough, New Zealand
$9.99 750 ml. $95.90 cs.

Now, this is a great “best bang for your buck” wine!  It has an invigorating, but not over-bearing citrusy nose.  Ripe grapefruit, grass, and gooseberry flavors are plentiful in this perfectly balanced New Zealand entry.  Why not try it with shrimp kabobs?

Mas Carlot Les Enfants Terrible 2007
Costieres-de-Nimes, France
$14.99 750 ml. $143.90 cs.

This is an interesting and unusual blend of 50% Mourvedre and 50% Syrah, and we must say, it is tres elegante!  The name is derived from a discussion the winemakers were having, during the creation of this cuvee, about how rambunctious and mischievous their kids were.
Wine Advocate: 89 points- “offers oodles of fruit along with superb purity and freshness, and a medium-bodied, savory, luscious personality.  Enjoy it over the next 4-5 years.”

Lovingston Seyval Blanc 2008
Virginia, USA
$12.99 750 ml. $124.70 cs.

This grape variety flourishes in the cool east coast climate.  We keep hearing about how nice some of Virginia’s wines are, and we were extremely pleased to discover this treasure.  Lots of fragrant floral aromas and shows pear, apricot, minerals, and herbs on the palate.  It is a terrific cocktail party wine and well suited for formal dining. You’ll be delightfully surprised!

Bodegas Aragonesas Coto de Hayas “Tinto” 2008
Campo de Borja, Spain
?$8.99 750 ml. $86.30 cs.

Here is a great “value” wine made of 50% Garnacha, 20% Tempranillo, 20% Syrah, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Campo de Borja region.  The grapes are gathered from three vineyards that are over 100 years old. This Spanish beauty offers dark berry, plum, and black cherry aromas and flavors.  You’ll probably want to pick up a case of this to keep on hand.

Lander Jenkins Vineyards “Spirit Hawk” Chardonnay 2008
California
$12.99 750ml $124.70 cs.

Every once in a while we stumble upon a California Chardonnay that excites us enough to put it on the Top 12, and it figures that this one is the younger brother of a past Top 12 California Chardonnay (Rutherford Ranch). It’s nose is fresh peaches, pineapples, orange zest and, in the background, elegant toasty oak and vanilla notes. On the palate it’s soft peach and tropical fruits flavors mingle with the creamy textures and flavors from that good ol’ american oak.

Van Ruiten Family Winery “Glory Days” Zinfandel 2008
Lodi, California
$9.99 750ml $95.90 cs.

Not for the faint of heart, this Zin is big, bold and decadent. Its aromas of blackberry, bright raspberry, cassis, crushed rocks and pepper are accompanied by lush dark fruit, pepper, spice, and mineral flavors, a rich mouthfeel, and a long finish. Big tannins supplied by 5% 99 year-old vine Carignane, 6% Petit Sirah, and 2% Tannat.

Marques de Irun Verdejo 2008
Rueda, Spain
$12.99 750ml $124.70 cs.

At the Midway we believe that Verdejo is the next big thing, so we’ve been featuring several over the past few Top 12s. This one exhibits a textbook Verdejo nose; bright and mouthwatering pineapple and citrus fruits. Great acidity, flavor and finish will leave you wanting more.

Vina Herminia Rioja Tempranillo 2008
Rioja, Spain
$11.99 750ml $115.10 cs.

Spanish reds are all about maximum character for a minimum price, and this one is spot on. This 100% Tempranillo is a “Joven,” or young bottling, which means the wine sees no oak. It has a lovely dark purple color that will woe you before you can put the glass to your nose. Rich dark fruit accented with plenty of garrigue, herb, cumin and chili powder notes. Silky tannins and good acid make this wine perfect many foods.

Simonnet Febvre Cremant de Bourgogne
Burgundy, France
$16.99 750ml $163.10 cs.

This bargain sparkler is made by a great producer of Chablis, and we were eager to feature this 100% Chardonnay, made using the Methode Traditionale, as one of our favorites for the holiday season. It has an intense and rich nose of nuts, butter, and mineral. On the palate it is refreshing with a lot of bubbles.

Vinaceous “Raconteur” Cabernet Sauvignon 2006
Southern Australia
$14.99 750ml $143.90 cs.

A very unique expression of Cabernet Sauvignon. The nose is cassis, dark fruit and a little herbaceous. Big, but silky tannins and rich fruit give it a whole lot of gusto on the palate, and as the name suggests, it will “reward the owner with a more complex story as it develops…”

$7.99 750 ml. $76.60 case.

This is a knockout red from the Cariñena region located in Northwest Spain, one of the oldest established growing regions in Europe and the source of the Carignan varietal. This is another keeper for the price-conscious consumer. We love it, and you will too! It’s rich, dark berry, plum, and mineral nose and flavors form a nice soft round mouth feel. Four Vines Naked Chardonnay 2008

Domaine de la Chanade “Les Rials” 2008
Southern France
$8.99 750mL $86.30 cs.

This unique “off-dry” white has been a favorite of ours four several years now.  It is only available to us in the Spring, and our supply doesn’t last for long.  The grape is called Loin de L’oeil.  (Ask for an explanation of the term “Loin de L’oeil” while you’re tasting it with us.)  It has floral and citrus aromas with tropical fruit and “candied delicacies” flavors.  Drink naked… just kidding?

Notro Malbec 2006
Mendoza, Argentina
$9.99 750 ml. $95.90 cs.

We found this terrific unoaked red and dubbed it a natural item for our Top 12.  A later release from the winery means the tannins have subsided somewhat giving you a more rounded, gentler wine.  Earthy notes on the nose and rich, ripe blackberry and black cherry flavors with a hint of spice and licorice.  Phone in a pizza or create your own, you’ll love it with this wine!

Fattoria Colsanto Ruris 2007
Umbria, Italy
$10.99 750 ml. $105.50 cs.

We’ve carried this wine for about a year now, but we felt that not enough people knew about it.  It is a complex beauty from Umbria comprised of 70% Sangiovese, 20 % Merlot, and 10% Sagrantino with rich dark berry fruit and a touch of spiciness.  Great with grilled beef tenderloin, pasta with tomato sauces, or just to sip.

Puppeteer Shiraz 2007
South Australia
$10.99 750 ml. $105.50 cs.

Gosh, it seems like there’s a new Shiraz coming our way every 5 minutes, but this is one we decided to add to our selection because it is so good!  Nice sweet cherry fruit and plum flavors with a spicy mid-palate and a touch of cloves.  Aged in French oak barrels.

Rubbia Al Colle Rabuccolo 2005
Tuscany, Italy
$15.99 750 ml. $76.70 cs. (6)

A wonderful, rich full-bodied red made from 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc,19% Merlot, and 9% Syrah, Whaaa? An Italian red with no Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, etc?  Not to worry, there’s plenty going on with this wine that says “Italy”!  A dark red color, and the dark berry, plum, and black currant flavors is more than enough to cover any oenophile’s palate. Bring on Mamma’s lasagna!

Monte Degli Angeli Pinot Noir 2007
Piedmont, Italy
$8.99 750 ml. $86.30 cs.

What a great value here, from the Monferrato region of Piedmont.  You won’t believe the silky, rich quality of this under $10.00 red. The cherry, berry, and plum aromas and flavors will astound you! Feed your friends salmon on the grill and fill their glasses with this gem!

Monchhof Estate Riesling QBA 2007
Mosel- Saar- Ruwer, Germany
$14.99 750ml $143.90 cs.

This estate was founded in 1177 by monks (Monchhof means monk’s house) and was purchased by the present owners, the Eymael family from Napoleon in 1804. The family has holdings in some of the best vineyard sites along the Mosel River. As a matter of fact some of the grapes for this wine are sourced from the great Urziger Wurtzgarten (spice-garden) vineyard. The soil from the steep vineyard sites is composed of iron-infused Devon slate, which transmits directly to the wine. It has a fruity nose with a hint of petrol followed by a burst of white peach and light sweetness. The minerality and acidity makes for a super refreshing taste that balances the sweetness. It is the perfect summer deck wine, all by itself or with some fruit and cheese.

Finca El Origen Torrontes Reserva 2007
Valle de Cafayate Salta, Argentina
$9.99 750ml $95.90 cs.

The scent of fresh flowers, peaches and citrus fruits explode from the glass of this hot variety. The palate has nice structure and acidity yet it’s not too dry. It is a lovely summer white at a bargain price. Recent DNA research shows a relationship with the Malvasia variety which has its roots in the eastern Mediterranean. The variety worked its way to the island of Madeira and most likely was transported to Argentina by Spanish missionaries. The beautiful Valle de Cafayate in Northwestern Argentina, very close to Bolivian border yields the finest (in my humble opinion) Torrontes wines.

Berroia Bizkaiko Txakolina 2007
Spain
$14.99 750ml $143.90 cs.

Txakoli (Chakoli) is a white wine from the Basque region of Spain made predominately from a local grape called Hondarrabi Zurri. It is the perfect summer wine as it is crisp, dry, lemony and a bit frizzante from some residual carbonic. Every Tapas bar in San Sebastian, Spain has bottles of Tzakoli to accompany the wonderful fresh seafood. This wine is just plain fun even down to how it’s poured. To enhance the spritz the rule is as you pour your elbow must be above your shoulder. Try it when you get home, or better yet when you go over a friend’s house.

Vellarde Tinto 2008
Vinos de Madrid, Spain
$9.99 750ml $95.90 case

This Spanish beauty is 60% Tempranillo and 40% Garnacha, and is sure to be the hit at your BBQ.  It is rich with flavors of bing cherry, black fruits and a touch of spice.  A cheeseburger should come with this one.

11. Barco Viejo Syrah 2007
Colchagua Valley, Chile
$7.99 750 ml. $76.70 case

We’re extremely pleased with all the wines in this “Top 12”, but this one, in particular, because of the incredibly low price! A husky, rich and warm red with black currant, plum, pepper, and even mocha flavors. It is named after the lovely city of Valparaiso, the old harbor of Chile.
